These Natives were the first to create the umiak, or large open skin boat 15-20 feet in length. They were used for hunting whale and walrus. They were made out of 8-10 bearded seal skins stitched together and carefully lashed to a wooden frame.
The closed-skin boat, the kayak, were constructed by carefully fitting stitched seal skins over wooden frames, leaving only a circular opening in the top for entry. These were 12 feet long, shorter and stubbier than the Unangan kayaks.
